Of all the holidays that we have you’d think it would be hard to come up with a horror story to wrap around St. Valentine’s Day, but they came up with that idea in 1981 and now in 2009 we’re given the remake. There are two things that make this remake better than all of the other horror remakes that have come over the years, the first is that this film is done in the new Real-D 3-D effect that is very well done and doesn’t over power the film, so when it is eventually out on DVD the audience will be able to see with or without the glasses. The second is that the original story was kept basically intact, so that the shock factors and suspense of the plot still thrills the audience.
Ten years after a deranged miner goes on a murderous rampage on Valentine‘s Day, a new vicious and brutal spree begins with evidence pointing to the long dead miner. With all of the young fresh faces that you see in this film it was nice to see a couple of veterans also, even though their roles are used to keep the plot moving it was nice to see Tom Atkins and Kevin Tighe in parts that were strong. The stand alone feature to this film is the use of the 3-D effects, their not the effects that I grew up on, let alone the way they were used in the 50s and 60s, their more modern and work more flawlessly then in passed films. But the drive that this film has is the storyline, it follows the original pretty much yet with new CGI effects, and other visual impressions, this movie is fun to watch from beginning to end.
I’m not saying that this film is better than the original from 1981, but this brings the terror and suspense back to life in an old classic. Since the whole film is shot in the 3-D effect, and done very well, and using the new plastic glasses you actually forget that your wearing special glasses and just enjoy the film. After years of horror remakes, with more failures than successes, the viewing public is finally given a very well done movie that the target audience can enjoy.
