Charlotte's Web (2006)

Sometimes when a film is remade there is something lost in the translation, and this factor is usually what keeps the audience from a remake. But here we have an enjoyable story that doesn't fall into the pit that so many others do. With the advances in CGI filming changing this classic story into a live action film was a natural fit. The list of actors doing the voiceovers reads like a catalog of A-List performers ranging from Robert Redford to Julia Roberts to Oprah Winfrey. Dakota Fanning plays Fern, the young girl who falls in love with Wilbur the pig, she does such an excellent job that you can see that this will be one of the jewels in her crown of achievements.
When young Fern saves the runt of a pig litter from her father's axe, she and Wilbur the pig discover what love and friendship truly mean with help from Charlotte the spider and the other barnyard animals. The CGI animation that is used throughout the film blends in so well with the live action that the line between the real action and the animation is almost invisible. Besides the fact that the story has been changed from the old style of animation, the other big difference is that it's no longer a musical. With the absence of the musical numbers the story could be beefed up and the characters became more playful and enjoyable.
Its great to see a classic like this be modernized from the animated version of the 70s to a live action version that children will enjoy just as much. All of the life lessons that are portrayed in this film, from friendship to love to death, are dealt with in a way that children understand and can come to terms with which is a wonderful thing to see in todays movies. This is a wonderful story and was well deserved to be remade in the modern animation format, but thankfully the producers didn't alter the original tale in order to modernize the story.
