Ever since Saving Private Ryan, most war films are measured on how realistic the battle scenes are and how good the story is. This movie takes a different approach than most war films, set in the Korean War the movie is completely from the South Korean point of view. The two actors that are in this film, Jang Dong-Gun and Won Bin, look like they could actually be brothers in real life, which helps with the believability of the situations. When a young brother is forced into conscription at the beginning of the Korean War, his older brother is also forced into enlisting just to save his brother. The graphic effects of the battle sequences are superb; the wounds that the soldiers receive are realistic and at times disturbing. The acting is great; you follow these characters along and feel for them at every crossroads when something desperate happens. At times throughout the film you just get mesmerized by the horrific and hopelessness of the situations. And when they reach the point of the Chinese invasion you feel as devastated as the characters on the screen.
Watching a war film from somebody else's point of view is great and eye opening, especially when all that you've ever seen is Americanized war films. This movie actually gives you some story of what is going on in the country before the U.N. and American forces showed up. If war films are your chosen genre, you should check this out, in view this movie is a good as Saving Private Ryan.
