Having a no holds barred race across the country with multiple contestants is a concept that has been done repeatedly over the years, and this is one of the earliest entries into this very small genre. This film was made in 1975-76 so the cars look dated and the stunts are a little plain compared to the spectacular acts that are filmed for today's films. This film is set up more as a drama than an action or comedy, which even though the cars are racing pretty fast the story is dragged down by the plot. Even though this is what most people would consider as a low budget film, the race, car crashes and the fight sequences aren't enough to keep the audience interested in the story.
An illegal race across country, from the west coast to the east coast with a $100,000 prize for the winner, is the playground for some speed demons that are looking for the prize and a new lease on life. The star of the film is David Carradine, with smaller parts going to Veronica Hamel, Robert Carradine and a walk on part for Sylvester Stallone, but I'm sure this is one of those films that they would rather people would forget about. This mess just doesn't hold a candle to the other movies in this small genre; there is nothing memorable about any part of the story to talk about.
I had tried for a long time to see this film because I've enjoyed all of the other incantations of this theme and now after watching it I can honestly say that this is the bottom of the barrel. I can honestly recommend the Gumball Rally or the Cannonball Run movies as an alternative to this movie, you could use this movie in film school to show students how not to make a car chase film, and if there was some place where I could get back the hour and half that I spent watching it I would do it in a flash.
