Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Love stories come in all shapes and sizes, some are cute and adorable, and then there are the ones that become epic and stand the test of time. This is a story that has fallen on bad times, the relationship is on the skids and there just doesn't seem to be any hope for the characters. Also there are some things that are a little strange about the story, the continuity of the storyline is a little messed up but that helps with the loss that Jim Carrey's character feels. With Kate Winslet and Elijah Wood playing the moral and immoral sides of the relationship with Carrey's character, we are given a wonderful performance to a strong story that couldn't be done any better.
After breaking up with his girlfriend Joel finds out that about a medical procedure that can remove memories from your brain, but half way through he decides he wants to keep what's left and begins hiding inside his own mind from the doctor. Some of the camera tricks that are used during the erasing procedure are very well done and actually help drive the characters emotions to a new high point each time a memory is taken away. Watching the relationship unfold in reverse is a little confusing but where you see the problems finality before the build up only drives you to like these people even more.
I wasn't expecting too much from this film, so I was pleasantly surprised when it was over I that I had enjoyed myself through the whole movie. For those looking for a straightforward love story this isn't it, it's so offbeat, and with 95% of the story in reverse, you have to keep an open mind about everything from the plot to the medical procedure that is preformed on Joel. It has all of the elements that a good romantic comedy needs, fun characters, witty dialog, good guys and bad guys, and just enough drama and comedy to keep you laughing and crying to the very end.
