Television shows about television shows don't come off very well, either they get bogged down with trying to be funny and all of the jokes fall flat or there is too much emphasis on the production side of the show. Here however there is a perfect mix to the audience what goes on behind the camera as well as mixing in the personal lives of the characters to spice things up. One of the lead actors in this fun and witty show is Robert Guillaume, who most people will remember from the series Soap and Benson. Here he plays the Executive Producer for Sports Night, and when in real life he suffered a stroke during the run of the show, instead of replacing his character they wrote his stroke into the storyline, which ended up just adding more drama to an already brilliant show.
Trying to keep a show entertaining and on the air, while the network is trying to do what ever they want, is hard for the members of Sports Night but if they can keep they're personal lives in order and their spirit of the game they might just make the 11:00 show start. The interaction between all of the characters is mixed just right and as the shows goes on you learn more and more about their pasts and grow to like them more. Having the camera angles move throughout the studio as the show is being produced, and while it's on the air, is an interesting and fun aspect to the series. With all of the techno babble that is mentioned throughout the show you would almost think that the viewers would get lost rather easily, but after the first few episodes you can catch on to just about everything that they are talking about.
This series falls into that category that we have all become use to, a show that was about to really hit its stride and the network pulls the plug. The series was left with an opening for a continuation into a third season that never came, but even with this none of the major storylines that were being explored are left dangling. From beginning to end it is one of the more enjoyable shows that are available on DVD and since it only ran for the two seasons there aren't enough episodes for it to be offered into syndication. So if you've never seen, or heard of, the show you should check it out its fun, clever, and at times it will make you think about the way that you interact with friends, family, and co-workers, whether you like them or not.
