Another homerun for Marvel Entertainment. With more than 40 years of source material, between comics, books and television, we finally have a big screen version of the Hulk that we can all be proud to watch. Taking the best parts of the TV series starring Bill Bixby and the classic comic storylines Louis Leterrier brings to life an honest and true version of the legendary character. Edward Norton does an outstanding job as Bruce Banner and plays the role to the hilt, not since Bixby's role on TV has there been a believable version as this.
After being on the run for 5 years, Bruce Banner, aka The Incredible Hulk, is hiding from General "Thunderbolt" Ross in Brazil, but when a chance for a cure presents itself, to rid him of the monster inside, he must travel back to the U.S. with some dire consequences. There are times through the movie that the CGI is very apparent, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the film itself. With strong performances from William Hurt, Tim Roth and Liv Tyler the story comes away with an air of superiority, it would be a shame if the studio can't get the key stars to come back for any sequels, because these actors have complete domination over their characters.
If Marvel thinks that we, as a collective audience, are just going to continue to go to outstanding movies about characters that we've grown up with and special effects that rival we have been seeing in the comics, then they know us pretty well. Even though this is only their second film that they've had complete control over, this is a great running start. Most new production companies have a hard time stringing two hits together coming out of the gate. With the mountain of source material that Marvel has to work with and true control over how the films are made, then we as fans are in for a long run of movies that will be fun to watch and spectacular to see.
With all of the expectations about this film and Iron Man it was only natural that Marvel tied the two films together with a cameo by Robert Downey Jr., as Tony Stark, at the end of the film. With this small cameo they connect two powerful films that help with the lead in to an Avengers film that the studio is talking about a 2010 release. So as more of the Marvel films are made and add to the mix in this direction, I believe its going to be a good thing to be a comic book fan.
