Post-Apocalyptic stories have become more and more inventive since the end of the Cold War and the terrorist attacks on 9/11, they have had to come up with ways to bring about the end of civilization that are fantastic but also believable. This story takes an interesting approach to the end of the world, set in our current time frame, with some tweaks on the technology side, this tale presents the end of days that in some ways seems realistic. Even though the cast is quite diverse the standout performances comes from Dwayne Johnson and Justin Timberlake, here as in other films they both show the expanse of their craft by playing characters that are far beyond anything that they had done before.
The coming apocalypse is foreseen by a former actor but since everyone else has their on agendas will the truth be seen for what it really is. Shot with an air of believability that strikes very close to home we're given a glimpse at a Los Angeles that is on the verge of becoming the focal point of the end of the world. With a cast of actors that run the gambit from comedians to action stars to musicians, none of the roles that they are in seem typical of their profession. And that's one of the great things about this story not one of the actors in the film are in roles that you would expect them in, that alone maybe one of the reasons that people stayed away from the theater when this was originally out.
This visionary tale is directed by Richard Kelly, who had given us the remarkable story of Donnie Darko, here the story is laden with conspiracies that seem believable and realistic. It's a nice change to see an end of the world story that doesn't involve nuclear bombs or a plague. This film didn't get much time to acquire a following in the theater, but maybe since it's on DVD now it will find the audience that it deserves, and believe me it is well worth the time to see it.
